Advice for common dental emergencies in Dunstable

If you experience a sudden dental emergency, it can be frightening.

Here are some common dental emergencies and tips on what to do whilst waiting to see the emergency dentist.

Knocked-out tooth

You should call the emergency dentist immediately as time is of the essence with this type of dental emergency and may mean the difference between saving your knocked-out tooth.

If you have found the tooth, either attempt to re-insert it into your gum and hold it with a clean cloth or keep it in a container of milk. Do not hold the roots of the tooth, only handle by the crown.

Chipped or broken tooth

If you experience a broken tooth due to a trauma, you may need an emergency filling, crown or even an extraction. Take paracetamol for any pain whilst you wait to see the emergency dentist.

If you have a chipped tooth, your dentist may be able to smooth out any uneven edges and use bonding or a filling for any missing parts.

Painful swelling

If you experience painful swelling to the teeth, gums or face, you should not ignore it. Swelling may be caused by an infection or a tooth abscess which need immediate treatment.

You should call the dental surgery in Dunstable and take paracetamol for any pain. Drink plenty of fluids and do not lie down.

FAQ's for Emergency Dentist

I have terrible toothache, does this count as a dental emergency?

If your toothache is persistent and has lasted for more than two days or if the pain is intensifying, then this counts as a dental emergency. You should call immediately for an appointment. Take paracetamol for your pain, rinse your mouth with salt water and avoid eating very cold or hot foods.

Do I have to pay for an emergency dental appointment?

If you are an NHS dental patient, you will have to pay under band 1 charge. Your dentist will try to carry out all the treatment you need in your emergency appointment, but bear in mind that if you need any follow up appointments, you will have to pay for this separately. If you are a private dental patient, the price will vary but is generally slightly more expensive than a check-up appointment.

I’m scared of the dentist, will seeing the emergency dentist be traumatic?

We are trained to deal with nervous patients and will take good care of you. Should any invasive procedure be needed, we will give you a local anaesthetic so that you cannot feel any pain. Seeing the emergency dentist should alleviate any pain that you are feeling rather than add to it.

Had my first appointment at the practice today and my daughter’s first dentist appointment ever. What an incredible experience! The 2 lovely ladies made the whole thing so special for my daughter. They were kind, warm and on top form with the humour! She’s asked if we can go back again tomorrow! And fixed several months worth of tooth sensitivity for me in minutes. Looking forward to going back for whitening treatment.

My son and I had a wonderful visit to the dental clinic yesterday and just wanted to share my appreciation. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the receptionist, whose friendliness set a reassuring tone for the appointment. The care and attention we received throughout were excellent.

My dentist was not only professional but incredibly kind and knowledgeable. Her advice was invaluable — she explained everything clearly and made sure we were comfortable every step of the way. The treatment itself was smooth and effective, and we left feeling confident in the care.

I had an appointment yesterday with Dr. Adam and his assistant, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. I came in for an extraction and a filling, and even though I had been there before, I was still very nervous.

Dr. Adam was incredibly professional, calm, and reassuring throughout the entire visit. His assistant was just as friendly and supportive, which made a big difference in helping me feel more at ease. The clinic was spotless, and the whole procedure was done with such care that I didn’t feel any pain at all.

I also want to mention how helpful and kind the reception staff were—they made the whole process smooth from the moment I walked in. Their warm welcome and efficiency really stood out.

I truly appreciated how everyone took the time to make sure I was comfortable. I would definitely recommend Dr. Adam and his team to anyone looking for a trustworthy, caring, and skilled dental practice.
