At your first appointment, we will examine your teeth and gums and take x-rays. We will also discuss your oral and general health history.

Dental implant surgery

Dental implant surgery takes place at the dental practice in Dunstable. You will be given a local anaesthetic in your mouth so that you cannot feel anything. If you have any teeth that are in poor condition, they are gently extracted at this time.

Next, the dental implant or dental implants are carefully placed into your gums along with a temporary crown. You may feel sore after the local anaesthetic has worn off and you should take paracetamol to manage the pain. You should feel better and be back at work or your usual routine in a day or two.

Healing

We leave a period of between two and six months for your gums to heal and for your jawbone to fuse with the dental implants. This is an important part of the process and cannot be rushed.

How long does dental implant surgery take?

This will depend upon several factors such as how many dental implants you are having and the complexity of your case. On average, a single dental implant usually takes about an hour to place.

What happens if I don’t have sufficient bone for dental implants?

The success of dental implants depends upon the quality and quantity of bone that you have in your jaw. If you do not have sufficient bone, we can discuss bone grafts – which means taking a small amount of bone from another part of your body to support your dental implants.
